A Note from the Sailing School Director |

June 13, 2011 This year's program will provide some structure to the program that hasn't existed to this point. My main goal this season is to set up a framework to allow for improvement as the sailing school goes forward. I decided not to add to the junior instructor pool this year because I want to evaluate the junior instructor program for the future. We are not phasing it out and we have two junior instructors for the season - they happen to be the same ones as last year. From a structure stand point we are going to have 3 instructors with responsibility for the 3 major classes of boats we have in sailing school. (Emma, Blaine, Becca).We have two first tier instructors (Alex and Brice) which will support head instructors for classes of boats. Junior instructors will have some shore responsibilities and be involved in on the water training with head instructors. Next year there will be an overall head instructor position - this year we might have an interim head instructor that will help me keep tabs on operations. Sailing school will always need talented young adults to make it worthwhile for kids and parents who want to see their kids be involved in this program. There is a number of different factors that we need to consider in deciding who we hire from year to year. This process is going to be formalized going forward and we are going to address this during the 2011 season. We'll ask young adults to apply for all instructor positions and the Director will likely review prospects with a committee and make a decision in the fall for next year. I can't tell you what kind of numbers we'll look at for junior because again I need a year to see how things are working. This is new and it is different but I hope everyone will agree it is the best thing for the program. Advanced Sailing School / Training Program / Clinic - This is an ambitious idea and maybe it is too much for this year. What I want to do is to have an afternoon program that allows our young racers a chance to get out and learn and train in a supervised environment. I'm still trying to come up with a way to make this work. There will be something available but it might be only for a couple weeks this year. Most likely the 2 weeks before regatta week.
